Bleu de Hongrie 2024

$42.00

Bleu de Hongrie 2024 from Kolonia 52 is a vibrant expression of 100% Kékfrankos, the Hungarian name for Blaufränkisch. Grown organically in Pécsely, Hungary, this medium-bodied red brings together juicy red fruit, earthy complexity, and fine tannins in a style that feels fresh rather than heavy.

The aromatics move between deep blue and purple fruit, sour cherry, wild herbs, forest floor, and a touch of peppery spice. On the palate, tart cranberry and red berries meet earthy mineral notes, while vibrant acidity and a smooth, velvety texture keep the wine energetic and balanced. The finish is long and mouthwatering, with lingering sour cherry and mineral character.

The winemaking is particularly interesting. Hand-harvested grapes are divided into two batches: one combining whole-bunch and hand-destemmed, foot-stomped fruit, and the other undergoing semi-carbonic maceration with whole bunches in direct-pressed juice. The two lots are then pressed, blended, and aged for 15 months in large oak and amphora. Gravity-bottled, unfined, unfiltered, and with nothing added.
